  • As someone who followed the traditional route, I now realize I would have done things differently. I almost found myself with $15K in debt because I thought I wanted to be a lash artist—only to enroll in school and discover I didn’t enjoy lashing at all. Thankfully, I discovered I was good at brow shaping, but many of my classmates weren’t as lucky. They ended up with licenses they don’t use and school debt of $14K-$15K that could have been avoided. If I could go back, I would have chosen the smarter route, and I am confident they would have too. The traditional path is expensive and time-consuming, while the smarter route saves you both money and time and helps you get ahead in the industry.

    Traditional Route vs. Smarter Route:

    Traditional Route:

    • Enroll in beauty school
    • Get licensed
    • Get certified

    Smarter Route:

    • Get certified first
    • Then get licensed

    Why Get Certified First?

I went to school with 26 students, and only about 8 of us are actively using our licenses. The rest are stuck paying off loans they aren't even benefiting from because they never actually used their license. There was one student in my class who got certified first before getting licensed, and they were ahead of everyone in the class. Here’s why:

    1. Experience Matters: Most students think they know what they want to do until they graduate and realize it’s not what they thought. They end up with a license, only to find out they don’t actually enjoy the field they invested so much time and money in. This could have been avoided if they had taken the certification course first and figured out if it was a good fit.
    2. Get Hands-On Practice While in School: If you get certified first, you can start applying your skills in school with the guidance of your teacher. You’ll have support while making mistakes and learning, instead of doing it alone after graduation.
    3. Start Earning Right Away: The most important reason to take a certification course first is that when you graduate, you’ll have both your license and certification. This means you can start charging professional prices immediately and not be stuck charging model prices. You’ll already have experience and a portfolio built while in beauty school, and this will help you grow your business AND pay those loans faster.

    My Advice:

If you want to be successful in the beauty industry, consider getting certified first. Not only will you save time and money, but you’ll have real-world experience, start building your client base while still in school, and begin earning a professional income much sooner.
